FSC and PEFC

After a great deal of preparatory work writing procedures and work instructions, Control Media bvba has been awarded FSC and PEFC certification.

The path from a tree growing in an FSC-certified forest to a paper product is long and arduous, and it passes through a whole series of processes. The primary goal of Chain of Custody certification is ensure that FSC-certified materials remain trackable and traceable throughout the entire production process from forest to finished product. In so doing, consumers can opt for FSC-certified products in the knowledge that their origin has been verified.

Every link in the chain from forest to finished product has to be approved by FSC and thoroughly audited. Once certified, a company is permitted to buy, perhaps process, and then sell FSC-certified products using FSC-labelled materials. In short, FSC Chain of Custody certification allows companies to do business using the FSC label.

Below you can read brief details about the two trademarks – FSC and PEFC:

The FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) trademark is the best known trademark internationally. The trademark arose from a need to promote sources of timber. The FSC logo guarantees that timber originated from managed forests. The trademark is based on general guidelines consisting of ten principles categorized into criteria, indicators and standards. These general guidelines have been translated into regional guidelines for each country or region by local workgroups. It is important that there is a balance between the groups representing the various economic, ecological and social interests at both general assembly and local workgroup levels. In this way, all parties involved have an equal say. In the Netherlands, there are approximately 105,032 hectares (259,540 acres) of FSC-certified forest, and worldwide, approximately 100 million hectares (218.52 million acres) as of March 2007.

Another important trademark is the PEFC (Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification) scheme, formerly known as the Pan European Forest Certificate. PEFC certification is a voluntary initiative from the private sector. It offers forestry business customers a guarantee that the products they are buying have been certified by an independent body in accordance with PEFC criteria. These criteria focus mainly on sustainably managed forests. The aim of PEFC certification is to promote an international, credible basis for forestry certification trademarks and initiatives inside and outside of Europe, and to encourage mutual recognition of such trademarks. The PEFC Technical Document and associated statues define the basic requirements for these forestry certification trademarks. Given this trademark's origins, it leans more heavily toward economic factors than ecological ones. In Germany, for example, two of the eighteen seats on the certification council are reserved for ecological interest groups. Ecological interests are however represented–in part–by regular forestry organizations. Currently, there are approximately 196.32 million hectares (485.12 million acres) of PEFC-certified forest worldwide. As of April 2007, there were not yet any PEFC-certified forests in the Netherlands.
